S.E. Friedman of Redmond, Washington, is a writer who previously served as communications director for the antipoverty nonprofit Share Our Strength, editor of AmeriCorps News and with Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA).  She also led volunteer English as Second Language (ESL) classes in Boston, New York and Salt Lake City.
