Today, more than 64,000 readers subscribe to Blue Avocado for practical, provocative and fun commentary by and for readers in the community-based nonprofit sector.
How did we get here?
In 2008, the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance of California provided financial support for the first four years of Blue Avocado. In 2010, Blue Avocado became the official magazine of American Nonprofits. Jan Masaoka served as the founding editor and she deserves many thanks for her role in making Blue Avocado a vibrant and essential voice in the charitable sector.
Our mission at American Nonprofits, where the two of us serve on the board, is to strengthen the financial health of nonprofit organizations. Our vision is that nonprofits have access to the knowledge and capital they need to thrive. And like most nonprofits in the start-up phase of development, American Nonprofits has been exploring different program approaches to fulfilling our mission.
That necessitates a certain degree of trial and error.
Over the last twelve months, the board has been working through changes in leadership and operating models and gathering information about what Blue Avocado means to you, our readers. Today American Nonprofits is pleased to begin offering the benefits of that work with a new issue of Blue Avocado, featuring two terrific new articles and some of our favorite pieces from the archives.
What can you expect from American Nonprofits and Blue Avocado?
American Nonprofits is currently in the process of working with the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance of California (NIAC) in testing a loan fund for nonprofits with great results thus far and are in discussions with a credit union regarding expanding the loan fund concept across the country and are developing partnerships and resources all focused on improving the financial health of nonprofits.
Every two months, a new issue will be published. Each issue will bring you new perspectives and interesting conversations about the issues facing our sector as well as announce any new resources that American Nonprofits will be introducing. Popular columns like “Ask Rita” are here to stay, but we hope you will keep us on our toes and tell us when we hit the right notes and when we don’t.
Oh, and we’re on the hunt for writers. We can help you shape your idea and make your words shine. Email email@example.com. Or just hit reply and tell us what’s on your mind.
Thanks for making Blue Avocado one-of-a-kind!
