Credit union summit!
As this issue of Blue Avocado goes to press, we are winding up a national summit on the creation of a finance co-op for nonprofits: the American Nonprofits Federal Credit Union. With leaders from philanthropy, banking, social venture funding, other credit unions, and nonprofits, we are moving forward on our timeline to open in mid-2014.
Why a nonprofit credit union? Two quick reasons:
a) to make lines of credit and loans to credit-worthy nonprofits who are not welcomed by most banks, and
b) to move nonprofit and foundation deposits to a federally guaranted institution that will generate earnings to return to the nonprofit sector (move our money!). Stay tuned!
