Welcome to Blue Avocado : a new bite-sized magazine by and for people who work and volunteer in community nonprofits. Welcome, too, to returning Board Cafe readers, who can now access the Board Cafe column in an expanded magazine format!
Blue Avocado’s aim is to engage and support the people of community nonprofits, the ones who do the heavy lifting in building social justice and strong communities, and who create and drive the ideas that change our world for the better.
Reading Blue Avocado should feel like a 10-20 minute vacation: rather than careful abstract prose you feel you ought to read, we hope Blue Avocado will be enjoyable, ultra-practical, authentic, and speak to all the complexities of being part of the staff, board, volunteer team, or constituency of a community nonprofit.
Blue Avocado will publish on the 1st and 15th of every month—and is delivered via email newsletter, website, and RSS feed. Thanks to our sponsors, everyone can subscribe to Blue Avocado for free. (With print magazines, usually only one or two people in an organization end up reading them . . .this way everyone in an organization can access the information at any time.) In future issues you’ll see:
-
- Board Cafe for nonprofit board members
-
- Personal Finance column: making it work on nonprofit salaries
-
- Ask Rita in HR: A nonprofit-specific human resources advice column
-
- Consumer reviews of useful (and not so useful) products
-
- Word on the Street . . . nonprofit people on the frontlines report on the sustainability movement, human services, funding for films, and more
-
- Strategies for Financial Sustainability
-
- Worth Reading and Why: we find the (free) great needles in the haystack of nonprofit reading material
-
- Three Minute Vacations (cultural experiences you can have right now)
