Welcome to Blue Avocado 2.0! I’m honored to serve as the new Editor-in-Chief and first and foremost, I want to assure each and every one of you that we will maintain BA’s high standards and stay focused on providing tactical, practical tips and tools for small- and mid-sized nonprofits.
So stick around and stay tuned: this newsletter is the first of six we have planned over the next year, plus we’ll be rolling out a new website shortly to make our incredible repository of content easier to peruse. On that note, please take a sec to complete this survey and let us know exactly what content you’re most excited to see in future issues and highlighted on the new site.
Although I’m daunted at the proposition of filling the huge shoes of our founding editor, Jan Masaoka, who is hard at work running California Association of Nonprofits, I’m excited at the unique opportunity to advance my life’s work of “helping people help.” It’s something I’ve done as an Executive Director (at Craigslist Foundation & Numi Foundation), author (Nonprofit Fundraising 101 & Nonprofit Management 101), consultant, and public speaker, and now I’m honored to have the chance to do it here, with and for all of you. I thank American Nonprofits, as well as our new publisher, the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group, for the opportunity to serve.
We really hope you enjoy this first newsletter, which features a wide range of new contributors, experts, and practitioners, while also highlighting one of our favorite pieces from the archives in our new feature, “Best of BA.”
This inaugural issue is a great example of what you can expect moving forward: Best of BA showcases one of Jan’s most popular pieces on ED compensation, while our Ask Rita column provides tips for handling summer interns and short-term employees. Nonprofit finance guru David Greco shares some poignant insights on how transforming funding can promote equity in all aspects of society, and our friends at American Nonprofits share a big announcement designed to help Bay Area organizations access an exciting new source of general operating funds. We dive deeper into funding insights in Paula Golden’s piece, which does a great job sharing the funder’s perspective and offering tips for building authentic relationships with these key partners. Finally, if you’ve ever wondered how DonorsChoose grew to be a huge nonprofit and enlisted the support of Oprah, Stephen Colbert, and others when they were a fledgling startup, then definitely check out my interview with their founder and CEO, Charles Best.

Darian Rodriguez Heyman is an accomplished facilitator, fundraiser, social entrepreneur, and best-selling author. His life’s work of “helping people help” started during his five-year tenure as Executive Director of Craigslist Foundation, after which he authored the best-selling Nonprofit Fundraising 101 and edited the best-selling Nonprofit Management 101 (Wiley & Sons). In addition to his active consulting, facilitation, and public speaking work, Heyman currently serves as the part-time Executive Director of Numi Foundation, Editor-in-Chief of the popular nonprofit online magazine Blue Avocado, and Co-Producer of the Gender-Smart Investing Summit.
