  • Dear B.A.:
Greetings from Montana. And thank you for the interesting e-newsletters. I subscribed a few years ago, back when I had just formed my organization, Other Nations. Though I wasn't sure if I would incorporate it as a nonprofit at the time (and ended up deciding not to), I've still enjoyed glancing through your mailings and from time to time have found helpful tips even though I'm just one person and her Mac.
This time I was saddened to see the item promoting bacon fests. Pigs--who are smarter than our companion dogs (not that intelligence matters; sentience alone matters)--suffer terrible lives of mental and physical abuse in factory farms before the final terror of the slaughterhouse. If you can bear to watch it, take a look:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T48yOYjz5sk
These are the routine excesses of factory farming. Lest you think that I cherry-picked one awful video, know that there are many out there (here's another https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_vqIGTKuQE ), and that the accepted industry standard for "euthanizing" sick or injured piglets on factory farms is blunt force trauma--slamming their heads against a surface or with an implement. This is only if these babies have survived having their tails and testicles removed without anesthesia. Kindness and decency are unknown in industrial factory farming, where animals are mere "production units" and profit is all that matters.
So while some buy into the frenzy and celebrate all things bacon (the pork industry must be absolutely gleeful that their marketing strategy has worked so well!) others of us, including many in the nonprofit world, see another story.
My final thought is this: If you can't bear watching the undercover videos, perhaps it's time to re-think your enthusiasm for bacon. If you'd like to learn more about factory farming and the billions of lives it consumes, visit my 'factory farming/CAFOs' page under 'issues' in the menu bar: http://www.othernationsjustice.org/
Thanks for listening and thanks for your good work helping nonprofits to thrive.
    Sincerely, Kathleen
...with compassion and justice for all
